Todays beauty standard came from black women. Why do people care about being pretty?
Main Post:
I grew up ugly, being born in the early 2000s when being skinny, pale, and having large straight hair. I’ve heard every body shaming, colorist, comment you can think of. Back then women would rather unalive than be told their booty was fat. Everyone’s body type, features, and skin color has been a beauty standard. This should be common knowledge so why do people care so much about being pretty? By the time I got into my junior year and then graduated to college was when having a big bottom, tan skin, wigs, braids, and having big lips really kicked off. Especially when Kyle Jenner and the family really started dipping into more beauty standards that was usually in black communities.
Now that I’m part of the beauty standard and started getting treated like I just came out the kewchie considered pretty. I wonder why people even care, and why people willing to alter themselves when they originally thought it was ugly to be dark/tan. I remember being called a wide back gorilla and teased saying how I look like a fish. When I vocalize that today’s beauty standard is from black cultures and how in many ethnic groups being dark, having a curvy body etc was seen as bad and young girls being fast. I’m shut down with the “everyone can have big lips and tan.”
I never said you couldn’t, I’m just not understanding why we are suddenly being thrown to the back. Like not long ago it wasn’t even normal to like your normal curly hair. Black kids was having their hair cut off because of “dress code.” And others didn’t know how to take care of their curly hair, and kept it straightened. It’s as if our features is okay for everyone but black people and has been completely stripped from its original makers. I don’t understand why people care so much about beauty standards when they change every decade. 💀 we went from wanting to be sickly skinny, pale, and then lowrise jeans and orange tan.
Maybe it’s because I got shit on for my looks most of my life so now I’m just non caring to fit in and just do what I want. If people think I’m ugly oh well, I’ll cry to god about it. But it just don’t make sense why people care so much when statistically everyone can’t be beautiful. While I get much more attraction now I’m still considered ugly from other people💀

Honestly, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. And subconciously, personality actually effects looks more than anything. Ive met people who exuded such confidence and were sure of themselves which made them crazy sexy! When beauty standards would have put them at a 5 out of 10.
Honestly personality and self assurance is what dictates your looks in adulthood (which you are just starting)
I grew up ugly too, very ugly. Born in 1989. Honestly i didnt get even remotely attractive (to beauty standards) until i was 25. Now that Im 34, Im very good looking for my demographic. Why? Because Im confident, I love myself, and I dont give a shit about beauty standards, which actually makes me quite desirable. Im excited to see how I age, as Ive only gotten better. And all those "hotties" from highschool are now overweight alcoholics with 4 kids...
You claim you dont care about being pretty, but just wait til you actually are. Most women who love and care for themselves, get better looking with age. You'll be clickity clack at 30, just wait, you'll love it...
Oh and I really dont think race has anything to do with it. Men have actually always liked thicker, curvy women, and history has shown that. That song "Brick House" is about a thick woman, and thats from the 70's. Its shit like media, model industry, and other BS that promotes stick figures, but thats not the actual reality
